The story begins with Bill and Ted facing the grim prospect of failing their high school history class, which would result in Ted being sent to military school and their rock band, Wyld Stallyns, never becoming successful. However, their future is altered when a futuristic mentor from the year 2688, Rufus (played by George Carlin), arrives in a time-traveling phone booth to help them.

Rufus reveals that Bill and Ted's music is vital to creating a harmonious future society and suggests that the boys use a time machine to gather historical figures to aid them in their presentation. Bill and Ted enthusiastically embrace the idea and set off on their time-traveling adventure.

Using the time machine, they travel through various historical periods, encountering and abducting significant figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Socrates, Billy the Kid, Sigmund Freud, Joan of Arc, and many others. The duo experiences numerous comedic and chaotic situations as they struggle to manage their unruly entourage of historical figures.

Meanwhile, an antagonist named De Nomolos, who despises the future society built upon the music of Wyld Stallyns, sends robot duplicates of Bill and Ted, known as the “Evil Robot Us's,” to kill the real Bill and Ted and sabotage their presentation.

Eventually, Bill and Ted return to their own time, accompanied by the historical figures, just in time for their history presentation. The historical figures impress the audience and their teacher, Missy, with their unique perspectives and talents, and Bill and Ted deliver a triumphant presentation, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd.

In the end, Bill and Ted's excellent adventure not only saves their future but also solidifies their friendship and inspires them to become better people. The film concludes with them using their newfound knowledge and experiences to improve their lives and fulfill their destiny of creating the music that will unite the world.
